Setting Up Job Types And Connections
How to set up job types and the records they can be linked to
Contents
Before your team starts creating jobs, it is worth deciding what kinds of jobs you need and what each one should be allowed to connect to. In practice, this means setting up job types and choosing which other records each type of job can be linked with.
Think of a job type as a category of work. Different job types can have different fields, different linked record options and different status rules.
Setting up Job Types
Create job types that reflect how your team actually works. For example, you might have separate job types for installation work, support work or internal tasks.
Each job type should only contain the fields your team genuinely needs. Keeping job types focused makes them easier to complete and easier to search later.
If you need help understanding how Mashoom fields work more generally, the Fuzzy Data guides explain the same field system used across the platform.
Choosing Which Records a Job Can Link To
Each job type can be set up to connect to other records. This is useful when a job needs to be tied to the rest of your data, such as a contact, a quote or another type of item used by your team.
For each allowed connection, decide:
- what type of record the job can be linked to
- whether only one linked record is allowed
- whether multiple linked records of that type are allowed
For example, you may want a job to allow one quote but several related contacts, or one site record but many supporting items.

Keeping Connections Easy to Understand
Only add connections that users will actually need. Too many link options can make job screens feel confusing and can lead to people linking records inconsistently.
As a general rule:
- use a single link where there should only ever be one main related record
- use multiple links where the job naturally relates to several records
- avoid adding links just because they might be useful one day
Once the job types and allowed links are in place, the next step is to decide how those jobs should move through their stages in Setting up Job Statuses and Rules.
